Dual-fuel equipment is the ideal option for saving energy dollars without having to sacrifice a bit of comfort because they respond to the current climate and act accordingly.
Dual-fuel heat pumps can be attached to your current furnace and look similar in appearance to high-efficiency central air conditioners. During the more temperate times of the year, the heat pump can supply inexpensive heating for your home. Then, when the temperatures start to drop, the pump shuts off and the furnace kicks in.
By using the heat pump rather than the furnace, you are able to save money on heating costs because you aren’t burning fuel. Heat pumps simply transfer heat rather than create it. As long as the air outside is above 35 degrees, it can grab heat from outside to warm your home. Once it gets below that point, the furnace takes over and the combustion process that creates heat begins.
The heat pump also works to cool your house during the summer by removing heat from inside your house and expelling it outside. Though a dual-fuel system may be more expensive upfront, the savings you create by reducing the amount you spend on energy can eventually offset the difference, often in as few as five years.
To find out if dual-fuel equipment is ideal for your home and location, you should have an HVAC consultant help write up a long-term cost analysis that compares various options. Not only will the immediate cost of equipment and installation be taken into account, but so will the projected energy costs for the upcoming years. A new heating system lasts on average 15 years so it is important to not just look at the immediate expenses.
