Budget Tight? Use These Energy-Saving Tips

With the winter heating season looming just ahead, there has never been a better time to find ways to cut back on your energy usage. Reducing the amount of power you use to heat your home can lower your monthly energy bills, leaving more money in your pocket to spend on the things that you enjoy.

Try implementing the following energy-saving tips to slash your heating costs without sacrificing comfort:

  • Lower your water heater temperature. Most contractors set the temperature of the water heater far higher than necessary during installation. By turning the temperature down to about 120 degrees, you can dramatically reduce your water heater’s energy consumption while still having access to water that is plenty hot for all your needs.
  • Stop air leaks. Air leaks are one of the biggest contributors to energy loss in the average home. To boost efficiency, seal all of the leaks you can find in the exterior of you home. Some common problem areas include around doors and windows; where walls, floors and ceilings meet; where the foundation and house meet; around attic access doors; and around pipes, wires or ducts that lead to the outdoors.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow to your furnace, putting an additional strain on the blower motor and reducing energy efficiency. You can eliminate this problem by cleaning or replacing your furnace filter regularly throughout the heating season.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. Use a programmable thermostat to automatically lower the temperature while you are sleeping or while you are away from home. This simple step can dramatically reduce your energy usage, resulting in big savings on your monthly heating bills.
  • Schedule a fall service visit. Have your HVAC equipment inspected by a trained professional before the winter heating season begins. Regular tune-ups can keep your heating equipment in tip-top shape, allowing it to run at maximum efficiency all winter long.
